Artistic Directors’ Statement

As Belle Spirale enters its fourth season, we are reflecting with tremendous excitement on what we have done and where we are going. We're not your typical project-based dance company. We’re building world-class repertoire accessible to independent, freelance dancers in BC.

Through our own creations and commissions, we provide local artists access to the kind of work typically only available through large-scale companies. We're internationally connected but truly Canadian - an artist-led model that maintains creative and financial control from conception through realization.

At Belle Spirale, the heart of our mission is the belief that dance is a distinct and powerful tool for connection, communication, and togetherness. The live arts bring people together in a way that the world needs now more than ever.

Our 2026/27 season explores two major themes: the artistic depth that comes from working with live music, and the fact that the more we collaborate, the more we thrive.

We are undertaking five major choreographic projects, with two of those being our very first European premieres.

We now have a core ensemble of ten dance artists whose work is the life force of each of these projects.

Four of the five productions involve live music.

All five are created in partnership with other organizations.

We are supporting many artists, bringing you live performance that is even more impactful because it is made with empathy, connection, partnership and artistic dialogue that bridges different aspects of our Vancouver community and beyond.

Our 26/27 season is about empathy, awakening and the act of truly seeing one another.

The devotion that our team has for the art we make together is an emblem for the kinds of citizens we wish to be in the world. We bring you into a deep dive into some of the most pressing issues of our time, where we can find meaning and evoke discourse together. Our poetic, visceral and virtuosic movement language, combined with our passion for scenic and visual design, brings you immersive worlds where you can lose yourself, find yourself, and discover a different way of seeing the world.

We cannot wait to go on this journey with you in a season that continues to celebrate the phenomenal artistic skills of our local community, brought into direct conversation with leading international perspectives. Thank you for being here with us.
